Below are several linking words you should use to boost cohesion & coherence in your writing.

When making transition between two categories that share the same trend/ pattern:

  • Similarly, [subject + verb].
  • Likewise, [subject + verb].

When making transition between two conflicting sets of data:

  • However, [subject + verb]. / Meanwhile, [subject + verb].
  • While [subject + verb], [subject + verb]
  • [subject + verb], whereas [subject + verb]
  • Nevertheless, [subject + verb]/ Nonetheless, [subject + verb].
  • On the other hand, [subject + verb].
  • In comparison with + noun, [subject + verb].
  • Compared to/ with + noun, [subject + verb].
  • In contrast, [subject + verb].
  • By (marked/ stark) contrast, [subject + verb].
  • Conversely, [subject + verb].

When moving to the next category/ item:

  • Regarding + noun, [subject + verb].
  • With regard to + noun, [subject + verb].
  • As for + noun, [subject + verb].
  • Turning to + noun, [subject + verb].
  • Looking at + noun, [subject + verb].
